Description: 6 to 8 cm long, 4 to 5 cm wide lengths can reach 10 to 12 cm; body bright yellow to bright orange and bumpy, sometimes speckled with small black dots; body plump, elongated, and oval with two horn-like rhinophores in front and 6 fringed gills in rear; gills are arranged in a circular pattern. Habitat: Found on docks and pilings or on rocks at or below the low tide line. Natural History: This Sea Lemon and its egg masses get their color from the sponges that it preys upon, especially Halichondria, and can be found in shaded areas where these sponges grow. |
